New York City
A Photographic Portrait
VictorLaredo
New York is a city of patterns and people, of patterned skylines and revealing details, a city of cities constantly changing. It is a city that was meant to be seen, a city, however, that is hard to capture. Victor Laredo, noted photographer who has exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, both sees and captures Manhattan. He has spent thirty years seeing the city, seeing buildings con-structed, seeing buildings preserved and transformed, seeing buildings, often noted landmarks, that exist no more.
In this collection of 170 photographic plates, Victor Laredo shows you his Manhattan, its places and its people. Architecture is of primary importance to Victor Laredo, with individual buildings, striking details, cityscapes from bold and unusual angles. But the people of New York are alsó of concern. We find them at work, at play, in the bustling life of streets and parks. But most important are the ways of... Tovább

But most important are the ways of seeing. Each photograph is a subtle study of an aspect of Manhattan: an amateur photographer in Central Park, a detail of a building in the East Village, lower Manhattan seen from Brooklyn. Manhattan is here from the Staten Island Ferry, through the financial district and the City Hall area, into Chinatown, the Lower West Side, the Lower East Side, SoHo, Greenwich Village, the East Village, Chelsea, Gramercy Park, Madison Square, the garment district, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Park Avenue, the Upper West Side, the Upper East Side and Spanish Harlem. For each photograph, Thomas Reilly provides location and gives background information.
Through new eyes you will see a New York you may never have seen before—often kaleidoscopic, often detailed, always photographic—patterns and people you may never have known existed. Native New Yorker or visitor, you can discover this city over and over again. Through Victor Laredo's photographic portrait you can find new locations to explore, new ways of looking at the city, perhaps even a new city to see.
A Dover originál (1973) publication. 170 photographs. Publisher's note. Text by Thomas Reilly. ix + 137pp. 814 x 11. 22852-5 Paperbound
A DOVER EDITION DESIGNED FOR YEARS OF USE! We have made every effort to make this the best book possible. Our paper is opaque, with minimai show-through; it will not discolor or become brittle with age. Pages are sewn in signatures, in the method traditionally used for the best books, and will not drop out, as often happens with paperbacks held together with glue. Books open flat for easy reference. The binding will not crack or split. This is a permanent book. Vissza
