This book is like no other collection of literary interviews that has been published in this country. It is livelier, more cosmopolitan, more informa-tive, and essentially more serious. The interviewers chosen by the criti-cally acclaimed Paris Review have done their assigned reading and they know what questions to ask. The authors interviewed answer the questions with candor, saying-^in général—exactly what they think about their own extremely varied careers, about other people's work, and about the problems of writing fiction in the contemporary world.
The interviews are with men and women in six countries—though most of them are Americans—who have achieved high distinction of many different sorts. The oldest of these ijovelists is E. M. Forster, born in 1879; the youngest is Françoise Sagan, born in 193 5, thirty years after Forster published his first novel.
