The Philadelphia Orchestra, one of the greatest in the world, was founded in 1900. It was first led briefly by two German conductors. The exciting years of growth and experimentation under Leopold Stokowski, during which period the character of the orchestra was formed, began in 1912; in subsequent years Eugene Ormandy carried on the Stokowski tradition and further mellowed the wonderful instrument he inherited.
Unique in having had only two conductors in 5 6 years, the orchestra was also the first to make orthophonic recordings, first to broadcast on radio, first to participate in Hollywood movies, first to appear on television and first to perform many important new works. Mr. Kupferberg has had the co-operation of the orchestra officials (not forgetting Stokowski and Ormandy themselves), and has had access to files while assembling his material, on the life and times of this great orchestra which will be visiting Europe in...
