"A year is made up of a certain series and number of sensations and thoughts which have their language in nature," wrote Henry Dávid Thoreau in his journal in 1857. Phenology, the study of natural events that recur periodically - the migration of birds, blooming dates of wildflowers, the ripening of fruit - began in the observations and writings of Thoreau. 130 years later, Minnesota phenologist Jim Gilbert has written a rich and varied book of observations on the changing seasons in Minnesota. Essays entitled 'Land of 15,291 Lakes', Thoreau in Minnesota', 'Hibernation', 'Orion', and 'Wintering Mourning Doves', give an indication of the reading enjoyment included. Advice ranges from the best time to seed a lawn to the best time to see a meteor shower. We learn that spring moves northward at the rate of 12 miles per day, about why the bluebird population has declined, and that somé spiders travel by balloon. Questions you've always wondered about are answered (Why do mosquito bites itch? Why do vineripened tomatoes taste best?), as well as somé you've never thought to ask (How do porcupines mate?). But Through Minnesota's Seasons with Jim Gilbert is far more than a book of facts. Anyone who loves the song of crickets on an August night, or hiking through woods on crunchy autumn leaves, or gazing across the silence of a snow covered laké, will love the companionship of this book. It is further enhanced by many of Mr. Gilbert's own award-winning photographs, and several unique drawings by local natural history artist, Laverne Dunsmore. Vissza
