The Venetian artist Giambattista Tiepolo (1696 -1770) was the greatest decorative painter of the eighteenth Century and the leading exponent of Italian rococo. His early development owed much to Ricci and Piazzetta among his contemporaries, and to Veronese among the older masters. But Tiepolo's own style - freer and lighter than. that of any of his models -soon emerged, and in 1725 he received his first important commission: to execute the frescoes in the Archbishop's palace at Udine. From then onwards, Tiepolo carried out a long series of commissions, throughout northern Italy and abroad, for frescoes and altarpieces. Endowed with a fertile imagination, and great gifts both as draughtsman and colourist, Tiepolo was perhaps the last great painter to be drawn instinctively to subjects taken from classical mythology and allegory. In his masterpiece - the frescoes in the Prince Bishop's Residenz at Würz-burg-he created a huge, radiant allegory, a late flowering of the Renaissance tradition, in which men move naturally and easily with supernatural beings in an ideal world.
