The Written Word is an English composition course for students in school, college and university who need to develop a good written style. The two books together form a complete course in controlled composition, but can be used separately, depending on the level of the students and the time available. Book 1 starts at intermediate level; Book 2 is upper-intermediate-advanced.
Written style is a personal thing. In this course the guidelines of what is acceptable in written English are laid down and the student is encouraged to develop a clear, logical and personal style within these guidelines. As well as covering the basics of spelling, punctuation and grammar, students learn how to deal with sources, quotations, footnotes and layout, and how to achieve particular stylistic effects.
