In 1969 the World Health Organization suggested to study new methods of using fluorides for the protection of dental health where fluoridation of community water supplies cannot be carried out.
In Hungary, after a preliminary study in 1965, a series of clinical trials started in 1966 with the aim of testing the caries-preventive effect of fluoride added to domestic salt in different concentrations. After Columbia, Hungary was the second country where salt, containing more than 90 mg F per kg, was put on sale. Experiments were performed parallel with three different salt F-concentra-tions and as a result caries fell by more than 50 per cent. Investigations confirmed furthermore that fluoride-supplemented salt has the same effect on deciduous teeth as fluoridated water. Unfortunately, it has been neglected for a long time that considerable amount of salt (about 70 per cent in Hungary) used in the households is not ingested which, of course, significantly influenced the results. In this book also the physiological aspects of salt fluoridation like daily optimal intake, tolerable and harmful amounts and drinking habits are dealt with. Finally the recent results reached in the field of caries prevention are assessed. Vissza
