Like Degas, he refused to be intimidated by taboos on subject matter, drawing his material from circuses and music-halls, the cafés of Montmartre and the Paris brothels. His technical range was wide: he was a superb draftsman and could convey movement, character and atmosphere in a few bold strokes. In the new medium of poster an he had no rival; his unique use of color lithography established a style which was to shape the whole development of graphic art. Vissza
