When he moved to Paris in 1882 he quickly became well-known in the artistic world of Montmartre. Here, as a painter of Parisian life, he developed a new and vital style — deeply influenced by Degas and the new pictorial conventions of Japanese prints — which was to typify a whole epoch. Like Degas, he refused to be intimidated by taboos on subject matter, drawing his material from circuses and music-halls, the cafés of Montmartre and the Paris brothels. His technical range was wide: he was a superb draughtsman and could convey movement, character and atmosphere in a few bold strokes. In the new medium of poster art he had no rival; his unique use of colour lithography established a style which was to shape the whole development of graphic art. Vissza
