TOURING IN
—-SoutkAfhcG-
During the preparation of this book author Maxwell Leigh spent two years researching, writing and, above all, travelling some 50 000 kilometres-exploring the countryside and selecting routes that include towns of interest and attractive landscape areas. The result is this collection of 83 self-contained, one-day motoring tours, each of which starts and finishes in the same centre and is accompanied by an easy-to-read map. The tour descriptions combine a highly readable and informative text with clear and concise route directions, while some 250 full-colour photographs provide an enticing foretaste of what the wanderer can expect to see. South Africa is a country of great and contrasting scenic beauty. And where man has set his imprint on the land there are many places of interest to explore-places which reflect the people and cultures that have played a role in shaping South Africa. With Maxwell Leigh as your guide you can discover this wonderful diversity, whether you are dawdling in the lush splendour of the eastern Transvaal or speeding through the dusty dry Karoo, drinking in the tranquil beauty of the Cape winelands or absorbing the relaxed ambience of the pleasure resorts in Natal. Using his consummate writing skills and great store of knowledge about the land, Maxwell not only adds fascinating detail to more familiar places, but also highlights many little-known corners of the country. In this exciting, colourful book he presents a guide that will satisfy the
wanderlust of many a traveller in South Africa.

Maxwell Leigh Educated at Kingswood College, Grahamstown, and briefly at the University of Cape Town before World War II and service as a naval officer intervened, Maxwell Leigh embarked on a career in journalism when he joined
the staff of The Argus at the end of the war. After spells as the newspaper's Supreme Court reporter and its correspondent in the parliamentary press gallery, he became 'The Wanderer' and for 14 years recorded the daily Talk at the Tavern of the Seas'. Many of the five million words he wrote in this column were about the environment and South Africa's natural and cultural heritage, and it was as 'The Wanderer' that he was awarded the Settlers' Prize for outstanding journalism. With photographer Gerald Cubitt, Maxwell is co-author of Scenic South Africa, published by Struik in 1983, and he is author of The Pictorial Motoring Atlas of South Africa, published by Struik in 1987.
