The twenty tours of this guidebook serve as a survey of historical sitds in Jerusalem, of the excavations on the Temple MouI nt, and of the different neighbourhoods. The book includes information concerning museums, public buildings, medical and educational institutions. Dávid Benvenisti, the author, was born in Salonica, a famous "Jewish" town in Greece before the Holocaust. He came to Israel during the Second Aliya and studied at the Teachers' College in Beit Hakerem. During the first world war he volunteered and joined the Jewish Légion. He graduated from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, majoring in the geography of Eretz Israel. He taught in several places and was the principle of the elementary school, Beit Hakerem. He practically walked, by foot, all over the country, and was a guide for students and teachers, as weil as for thousands of people, touring Jerusalem and other parts of the country. Thanks to his educational work for many years, his communal work and his activity for the development of Jerusalem, he was awarded the title "Yakir Yerushalayim" by the municipality of Jerusalem. In 1982, he was honoured with the "Israel Prize" for being one of the pioneers in teaching the georgraphy of the land, for organizing groups of hikers throughout the country, and for publishing guidebooks.
