The relief of mentái disorder is a major social and medical priority of thetwentiethcentury. Fordevelopingcountries, in particular,the problems are urgent. Firstly, with very limited resources, they need to assessthe kindsof disorder that they must providefor and introduce services relevanttoeachculture in a planned program me of treatment. Secondly, development ultimately turns on the behaviour of people, acting individually and as membersof cultural systems.
