This book, developed from a special research symposium of the Section on Social and Economie Sciences of the American Association for the Advance-ment of Science, is designed as a substantive survey of the broader research needs and directions in the disciplinary fields of économies, politicai science, sociology, and social statistics. The purpose of the book is to present a generalist treatment of social research to include a review oL and prospects for interdisciplinary research through the behavioral approach, which is discussed in a separate chapter. The problem of financing research in the social and behavioral sciences also is discussed separately. The experience and distinction of the collaborating au-thors of this volume enhance its value as a contribution to current research lit-erature in the areas the book is intended to include.
