The grandiose cave monastery Vardzia is an illustrious specimen of Georgián artistic culture of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The monastery's main church is notable for its peculiar architecture set off by the austere mountainous landscape, and the dwellings hollowed out of the rocks. Particularly interesting are the first reproductions in colour of a wealth of beautiful murals which have been preserved to our days in a very good condition, notably the portraits of the founders of the monastery and the main church, King Georghy III and Tsaritsa Tamar, and of the donor of the wallpaintings, eristavi Rati Surameli. Somé twenty objects of twelfth and thirteenth century applied art are alsó included.
