VARIETIES OF SPOKEN ENGLISH
This course is designed to train students with a good basic knowledge of English in understanding widely differing examples of spoken English—interviews, discussions, commentaries, informal conversations and so on; and in recognizing and producing a number of secondary features typical of the spoken, as opposed to the written, language.
The course comprises this workbook and fourteen tapes. The kernel of each of the fourteen units is an unscripted recording of a specific type of natural spoken English, using a wide variety of voices. Exercises using the workbook and tapes provide guided comprehension practice with the recordings, at intensive and extensive levels, and practice in features of stress, intonation, fluency and the formation of complex utterances.
The units correspond in subject-matter to those in A Higher Course of English Study 1, by Ronald Mackin and David Carver, which provides a similar treatment of written English-passages for study... Tovább
