There is comparatively little of Románián literature which has been made avaihble to English speaking readers. The selection of the present author for translation into English 1 represents a laudable and ami itious endeavour to redress the situation.
Voiculescu's Last Sonnets are themselves an ambitious venture to at once emulate something of the spirit of Shakespeare and offer us within the context of Románián literature yet another commendable and inspired example ofthe poetic genius.

Translation is an art and the translation of poetry represents the greatest challenge. The singular merit of Cristina Tátaru's translations is that they do not read as translations: Voiculescu's sonnets are transliteratedfor us as ifwritten originally in the English tongue. This is no mean achievement! As a result, the English reader has access to the works of a great Románián writer. Full justice is done to these works through the quality, accuracy and readability of the translations. These works are a valuable addition to our knowledge and sense of Románián literature.
