Thanks to Archbishop János Simor, who
laid the basis for a future collection of
Christian arts and artifacts back in the
nineteenth century, the Christian Museum
of Esztergom is today one of the largest
collections of ecclesiastical art in Europe.
Enlarging its holdings through purchases,
bequests and gifts, the museum now stands
in the historical town of Esztergom as one
of its unique institutions.
The most important part of the collection,
housed in the primatial palace, is the
picture gallery, which has one of the
largest collections of medieval Hungarian
painting in the country, including such
masterpieces as the Crucifixion Altarpiece
by Thomas de Coloswar, and four panels
by the Master M. S. Another part of the

covering all its major schools of painting.
There are, furthermore, some exquisite
medieval Austrian, German, Spanish and
Netherlandish works as well. The
sculpture collection, significant in its own
right, includes the statue of Mary
Magdalen from Cologne, the oldest piece
in the collection. The other pride of the
museum is the Easter Sepulchre from
G aramszentbenedek.
The collections of the Christian Museum
of Esztergom, which have been of great
interest to art historians as well as the
general public, have not been properly
documented in book form in over
twenty-five years. The present album
contains not only a short history of the
museum, but the detailed descriptions of
149 carefully chosen objects written by
eminent museologists and art historians.
The plates and their descriptions will not
only provide an excellent and
knowledgeable guide to the Christian
Museum, but will also aid in a more
thorough understanding of painting and
Christian iconography in the centuries
that represent the heyday of Christian art. Vissza
