"No city in Europe has more palaces spread over such a broad area, both on the Grand Canal and in other parts of the town, than does Venice. We call them houses out of modesty; only that of the Doge is called a palace. Certainly, if one talks of the principal cities of Italy, such as Rome, Naples, Milan, Genoa, Bologna, Padua, Verona, and Pavia, one will not find one anywhere with more than four or six buildings that truly merit the title of palace. But in Venice one can name almost one hundred, all of them, both ancient and modern, magnificent and large in structure and ornamentation," wrote Francesco Sansovino in 1581 in Venetia Citta nobilissima & singulare.

Through the centuries visitors to Venice have been overwhelmed by the grandeur of the city's culture and architecture. Venetian Palaces provides a breathtaking tour of more than fifty of its most luxurious palaces in the Byzantine, Gothic, Renaissance, and seventeenth-century styles. Along the canals, the palaces' ornate facades foretell the opulence and splendor of their interiors. Grand halls with marble and mosaic floors, frescoes by artists such as Tiepolo and Titian, and richly furnished salons hung with tapestries and paintings reveal the glory of past ages. Carved gilt ceilings, enormous oriental carpets, and sculptures and decorative objects from all over the world embellish vast private chambers. The history of each palace is discussed along with interesting anecdotes concerning its occupants and the events of the times. From the Palace of the Doges with its commanding position in the Piazza San Marco to the Palazzo Grassi and St. Mark's Library, this beautiful book dazzles the reader with its rich architecture and interiors.
Alvise Zorzi has written several books about his native Venice. Since 1984, he has presided over an assembly of international organizations dedicated to the preservation of this historical city. The work of art and architectural photographer Paolo Marton has appeared in numerous exhibitions. He has collaborated on several books, including Magnus' Venetian Villas.
