ROBERT LOWELL
says of
HEART'S NEEDLE "Except for Philip Larkin, Snodgrass is the best new poet in many years. He is the poet with content. He flowered in the most sterile of sterile places, a post war, cold war mid-western university's poetry workshop for graduate student poets. Most of the poems here have a shrill, authoritative eloquence j a few, such as The Operation and April Inventory are tremendous accomplishments. However, it's the best parts of the sequence entitled Heart''s Needle that I want to go all out for. They are beautifully perfect and a break-through for modern poetry. Their harrowing pathos will seem as permanent a hundred years from now as it does now."
Hearths Needle, which won the first $1000 award in poetry of The Ingram Merrill Foundation, and the i960 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, announces the arrival of a young poet of the very first distinction.

W(illiam) D(ewitt) Snodgrass was born in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvcinia, on January 5, 1926. He attended Geneva College (Beaver Falls) and the State University of Iowa. He has taught at Cornell University and the University of Rochester, and also at the Morehead (Kentucky) and Antioch writers' conferences. Mr. Snodgrass, who is married and the father of three children, now teaches at Wayne State University in Michigan. He was the 1958 Hudson Review Fellow in Poetry. Hearts Needle won the first $1000 award in poetry of The Ingram Merrill Foundation, and the 1960 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry.
the remarkable reviews oj
Heart's Needle
"W. D. Snodgrass may very well have written, in Heart's Needle, the strongest first book of poems in fifteen years."
John Hollander, Partisan Review
"Clearly a candidate for a National Book or Pulitzer Prize—or perhaps just immortality. It is the only book I have read this year in which the hard ribs of sincerity show through."
JuDSON Jerome, The Antioch Review
"This book is an event. A first volume, it announces the arrival of a poet whose best work has two rare qualities . . . genuinely discernible content . . . [and] his own tone of voice. . . . The masterpiece of his book is the title poem, which can only be read to be truly appreciated."
Samuel French Morse, Hartford Courant
"His poetry is particularly remarkable for its quantity of true feeling. His title poem, twenty pages about a daughter from whom he is separated by divorce, reaches a tremendous power of emotion about an intimate subject. . . . An extraordinary book."
Donald Hall, New York Herald Tribune Book Review
"Snodgrass offers us, first, a genuine subject imbued with genuine feeling and second, a voice that is, at least much of the time, personal and distinct. . . . Snodgrass seems to me by far the best poet to have appeared so far in this decade and probably one of the best of any age now practicing in America."
