Original research by physical, biological, chemical, and geological oceanographers is described in this work. There are also valuable reviews dealing with the way in which physical, chemical and biological aspects of the oceans can contribute to their fertility.
The emphasis being on South American waters, consideration is* naturally given to updwelling, eddies, nutrient rich areas, primary production, biomass, and the importance of trace elements, both from field observations and laboratory experiments. Interaction between coastal waters and oceanic waters, including discussions of enrichment and runoff, is also considered.
