Literature
Modern English Literature is a critical account of a wide selection of Shaw and Wells to Pinter and Hughes. The emphasis is on the prose fiction, poetry, and plays of the period; but from time to time the author discusses non-fiction writers, so as to suggest the general movement of twentieth-century thought.
Professor Robson's critical standards are broad and humane. At the same time his preferences are clear and he gives reasons for them. Thus the reader will find here not only a good deal of information about the writing of this century, but well-considered guidance as to what makes one writer more interesting or important than another.
W. W. Robson was a Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, from 1948 to 1970. He is the author of Critical Essays (1966) and a volume of poetry. The Signs Among Us (1968). He has taught as a visiting professor at universities in America and Australia, and in 1970 he became Professor of English Literature at the University of Sussex.... Tovább
