born in 1783 in New York City. As a child he enjoyed exploring as much as he could, and as an adult he travelled extensively. Later in life he spent much time in England, where he met the world-famous writer Sir Waiter Scott. It was Scott who stimulated Irving's interest in American folk tales. Irving wrote many books, and was the first American writer to gain international fame. He died in 1859 and was buried near Sleepy Hollow.
