THE BOOK
After a few decades of slackened water power utilization, today there is renewed interest in this type of electric power generation the world over. This fact has encouraged the publisher and the author to bring out the Third Edition of this book that has already sold out two Hungarian, German and English editions each.
Twenty-four years have passed since the Second Edition was published. The progress that has been made In research and in plant design and construction, and the technological innovations all called for the revision and updating of the material. Remarkable changes have occurred in the range of applicability of the various turbine types, and the relevant chapters have been updated accordingly.Water power sources previously considered less promising, i. g. tidal and wave energy, have been given their due weight in this new edition.

This reference book was written especially for professionals engaged in the planning and design of hydroelectric projects. In arranging his material, the author was led, to a great extent, by pedagogical considerations; consequently, the book can serve as a textbook for students in engineering as well, although — in its volume and its exhaustive treatment of a number of problems — it goes far beyond the scope of a university textbook. The critical review of the latest research results and the presentation of the author's own investigations cover practically all the scientific problems that arise In connection with the harnessing of hydropower. The book reflects the author's wide experience in research, In modelling techniques, in the planning and construction of various types of power projects, and in the detailing of multipurpose hydroelectric master plans. The book starts with the presentation of the various types of hydropower resources — including the possibilities of utilizing tidal potentials and wave power conversion — and the classification of plant types. Part Two covers the procedures of planning, the scheme, designing and construction of low-head development stations, with due attention to power estimate, the selection of plant arrangement, civil structures, machinery, and aesthetic and environmental aspects. Compared to the earlier editions, most of the chapters have been substantially revised and enlarged. The rapid evolution of tubular turbines has necessitated substantial changes in the chapters on machinery. For the preliminary planning of the powerhouse, the author suggests formulas and diagrams which may prove to be of considerable help to planners, placing the emphasis on instructive numerical examples. The text is supplemented by a great number of selected photographs and construction drawings of power plants already in operation and under construction all over the world. Vissza
