Ways to the Wilderness
Here is a New Zealancl scenic book with a difference. It is the master volume in full colour to Philip Temple's very popular series of Shell Guides to the great New Zealand walking tracks. Specially planned to have keepsake value over and above the separate booklets in that series, it displays to far greater advantage all the rewards, chal-lenges and natural attractions associated with eight established walkways, ranging from Waikaremoana in the north to Milford in the south.
The author/photographer's achievement in personally walking each of the major tracks here described and illustrated will be better appreciated in this large-scale sctting. In writing of the walks themselves he departs from the guidebook style but encompasses their full history as well as giving a first-hand account of the active day-by-day delights they offer. His selection of complementary photographs, on the other hand, presents a rangé of New Zealand 'wilderness' scenery and floral... Tovább

His selection of complementary photographs, on the other hand, presents a rangé of New Zealand 'wilderness' scenery and floral studies surely unmatched to date in its variety.
Most people will be well content to have walked any one of these great tracks. For those who have done so, as well as for intending walkers and even for armchair trampers, Ways to the Wilderness will be a book to treasure. Written and comprehen-sively designed by one with an abiding love of the mountains and the out-of-doors, it brings together for the first time a great deal that is rare and spectacular about our country.
To collect information and take photo-graphs for Ways to the Wilderness and for his Shell Guides to New Zealand's great walking tracks, Philip Temple walked all 450 kilometres of them, sometimes with company, often alone. He is no stranger to the high country; he has climbed extensively in the Southern Alps and has taken part in expeditions to remote parts of New Guinea and the sub-Antarctic.
Philip Temple's books have been appear-ing at regulár intervals since 1962. The first books recounted his own and other moun-taineers' adventures at home and overseas. In the 1970s his photographic books have established him as New Zealand's leading landscape photographer. In 1977 his limited portfolio edition of prints, Images of Wellington, was issued in support of the Wellington Town Hall promotion. He has had two novels published; a third is in preparation. Vissza
