Published In response to popular demand, this new edition of Ways with Watercolor contains 23 new color plates, making 37 color plates in all. Regarded by many as the outstanding work written by the late, well-known painter Ted Kautzky, the earlier edition has sold more than 50,000 copies since It was first published.
The timeless quality of Ways with Water-color is due to the author's single, undeviating purpose: to teach the beginning watercolorist how to handle his medium. He accomplishes this with simple, direct, teacher-to-student language, with purposeful illustrations, and a logical, progressive continuity. Kautzky sensibly begins with color pigments, paper, and other equipment, washes and strokes, and the use of accessories for special effects. He goes on to show how washes and strokes are used to effectively depict the important elements of most landscapes—buildings, trees, skies and clouds, mountains, rocks and reflections. Important chapters follow on the characteristics and techniques of handling color pigments— from limited palettes of two, three, and four colors to a full palette of 16 colors. All these lessons are put to work in chapters on The Winter Landscape, Village Vistas, Harbor Waterfronts, and Along the Beach.
Interwoven throughout the text are valuable instructions on composition and other subjects related to watercolor painting. And, in addition to the many demonstrations, there is challenging practice material. The purpose here is to help the reader to solidify each bit of knowledge and skill acquired before trying new techniques. This provides, in the author's words, "the opportunity to work with him; to, figuratively, watch over his shoulder."
