Eric Linklater, whose novels have ranged from Poet's Pub to Juan in America, here takes for his settings the imaginary northern University of Inverdoon, and the rugged landscape of the Orkneys. His hero is young Peter Flett, an adventurer with sailing and fighting in his blood. Peter - or White-Maa, as he is nicknamed by the Orkney folk - half-heartedly attempts to read medicine at the university, but his real enthusiasms lie with the wooing of pretty girls and the living of a rough, tough, virile life. White-Maa's Saga is narrated with an agreeably blended mixture of sensitivity, humour, and poetry, laced with the ever-changing local colour of the Scottish countryside.
