The wildlife and scenery of India and Nepal
WILD INDIA has never been so beautifully recorded as in this book by intcmationaliy acclaimed photographer GERALD CUBITT and world wildlife expert GUY MOUNTFORT. To obtain their remarkable documentation, writer and photographer travelled throughout the remotest parts of the Himalayas; the jungles, rain forests, deserts and swamps of an area the size of Europe.
With co-operation from the Government of India, Biey were able to visit areas such as Keibul Lamjao in Manipul, which few outsiders are permitted to enter. However, much of the photography records the splendours of India's more accessible national parks and wildlife sanctuaries and the species to which they give protection. With co-operation from the Government of India, Biey were able to visit areas such as Keibul Lamjao in Manipul, which few outsiders are permitted to enter. However, much of the photography records the splendours of India's more accessible national parks and wildlife sanctuaries and the species to which they give protection. Here is the wildlife, landscape and flora representative of the great Indian subcontinent, from the frozen peaks of the remote Karakoram range in Ladakh to the luxuriant 'shola' rain forests of the south-western ghats; fram the scorched deserts in the west to the great jungles and swamps of Assam and Manipur.
The inaedible diversity and colour of nahue's realm is vividly portrayed on film. Here are some of the world's most elusive and seaetive animals: the Ibex and Blue Sheep of the cold, wind-swept Himalayas; the magnificent Kashmir Stag and shy Musk Deer from the Hill forests and valleys of Kashmir and Garhwal. In the Deccan south, the rare Lion-tailed Macaque and Nilgiri Tahr. In the Rann of Kutch and Thar Desert of the west, the Wild Ass and Great Indian Bustard. The camera explores the last bastion of the Asiatic Lion in Gujarafs Gir forest, the deciduous forests and jungles of central India and the north-east - wild kingdom of the majestic Tiger, Swamp Deer, Golden Langur and Hoo-lock Gibbon, the One-homed Rhinoceros and herds of Elephant and Buffalo.
National parks, reserves, wildlife sanctaaries and wilderness regions are pichired in all their pristine glory - a rich and precious heritage that must be preserved not only for its own sake, but for the good of all who live within the region.
GUY MOUNTFORT played a part in the creation of some of the wildlife reserves and national parks. His concern for the conservation of India's natural heritage is a major theme of the book. He describes the changes brought about by massive deforestation and the ever-increasing human population, affecting the status and dishibution of species and the pressure on the natural habitat.
GERALD CUBITT'S superb photographs, however, prove that India is still rich in scenic beauty and in its great variety of animals, insects, reptiles and vegetation.
This book is a magnificent survey of wild India today, a record for those lucky enough to have seen it for themselves, a glimpse of its vast richness for those who have not and, for potenHal visitors, a valuable introducHon to the localiHes where this wiWIife and breathtaking sceneiy can best be seen and enjoyed.
