For five hundred years there has been a rich and continuous tradition of political verse and song in the British Isles - not celebrating the glories of monarchs and statesmen (there has, of course, been plenty of that from successive poets laureate or would-be ones) but attacking or ridiculing them and voicing the sentiments, protests and revolts of the common people. This book contains a representative selection of such verses, from the fourteenth century to the present day. It can be enjoyed without any special knowledge of history. Indeed, the history of the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish people speaks for itself in these verses. The editor, Mary Ashraf, has been an active trade unionist and socialist since 1934. She is the Englishborn widow of K. M. Ashraf, Indian political leader and historian. Mrs. Ashraf was formerly head of the Department of European Languages at Delhi University and is the author of a number of scholarly works on working-class history and literature.
