WORDS AND THEIR USE
Language is the very fabric of social life ; it is also a frequent source of misunderstanding and a major cause of friction in the present state of the world. The purpose of this book, based on extensive experience in adult éducation, is to make people more word-conscious. It shows, in clear and simple language, how words acquire and change their meanings, how new terms are born and how old ones disappear. The use of synonyms, the nature of figurative speech and other points of style are fully discussed. Attention is drawn to the dangers of am-biguity and to the misuse of language by the Propagandist and the salesman. " Basic English " and other remedies are explained and criticised, and there are full suggestions for further reading.
Dr, Ullmann is head of the Department of Romance Philology and General Linguistics in the University of Glasgow, and he is also actively engaged in extra-mural teaching. He ts one of the two editor s of Archivum Linguis-ticum,... Tovább
