THE STORY OF PAPER MONEY
Yasha Beresiner and C. C. Narbeth
The history of money reflects that of
civilisation. Today ninety per cent of
the world's financial transactions are
carried out with paper money, and we
can learn a great deal from its use
throughout history. But the study of
paper money issues has been neglec-
ted until very recently; coins of 1000
years ago can be dated quite easily,
whereas it is often difficult to date a
note less than fifty years old. Bank-
notes are now so popular that enthus-
iasts amass them like stamps, build-
ing their collections around countries
or themes. Others are fond of the
beautiful engraving work and acquire
for themselves an art gallery in

This book presents some of the fas-
cinating history that lies behind bank-
notes. The earliest paper money was
printed in China in 650AD, but it was
not until the seventeenth and eight-
eenth centuries that hand-drawn and
printed notes appeared in Europe and
America. Latin America's history is
reflected in currency issues, as is the
massive inflation in twentieth-century
China, Russia and Germany. Many
notes have special associations—the
French Revolution, the Siege of
Mafeking, and prison camp notes of
World War II.
For anyone interested in history, or
in starting a collection, here is a
valuable introduction, illustrated with
facsimiles of over 100 actual bank-
notes.
