The history of American art in the twentieth century is one of revolt, of conflict. It is the story of the American artist's attempt to free himself from European models yet at the same time join the mainstream of Western art, of his continuing dialogue with Europe yet search for native roots. His struggles to resolve these dilemmas and to bring forth a legitimate American art form as heir to the European modernist tradition are described by Barbara Rose, the noted art critic and lecturer, in this provocative—and much needed—analysis of contemporary American art.
Beginning with the first decade of the century and the revolt of The Eight against the strictures of the Academy, Miss Rose traces the evolution of American art within the context of social, historical, and intellectual events, discussing the 1913 Armory Show, a Trojan horse that unleashed the European avant-garde on the American public; the 1920s, a period of retrenchment, of compromise solutions, of provincial Cubism;...
Beginning with the first decade of the century and the revolt of The Eight against the strictures of the Academy, Miss Rose traces the evolution of American art within the context of social, historical, and intellectual events, discussing the 1913 Armory Show, a Trojan horse that unleashed the European avant-garde on the American public; the 1920s, a period of retrenchment, of compromise solutions, of provincial Cubism; and the 1930s of the American Scene painters, the Regionalists, the WPA projects.
In the late 1930s and early 1940's, the art center of the world shifted from Paris to New York, and for the first time a genuine American art movement was born: Abstract Expressionism. Miss Rose examines in detail the stylistic development of the first-generation Abstract Expressionists— including Gorky, Pollock, and de Kooning—analyzing their revolutionary techniques and the "heroic" aspects of their work. She then studies the painters of the New York School, the second-generation Abstract Expressionists, and the newest American painting: pop art, post-painterly abstraction, op, and minimal art.
Miss Rose concludes her brilliant critical history with separate chapters on American sculpture and architecture, presenting remarkable capsule histories of the exciting developments in these two art forms during the twentieth century. With 244 illustrations in black and white and 37 in color, her book is the most comprehensive—and up-to-date—survey yet to appear on American art in this century.
the author: Currently on the faculty of Sarah Lawrence College, Barbara Rose has taught at Queens College and the New School for Social Research. She is a contributing editor to Artforum and Art in America.
