About this The history of American art in the twentieth century has
Book
been the story of the American artist's attempt to free himself from European models—and yet to join the mainstream of Western art. His struggles to resolve this dilemma form the subject of this absorbing and much-needed book, written by Miss Barbara Rose, the distinguished American critic and art historian.
Beginning in the first decade of the century, Miss Rose traces the evolution of modern American art against its social, historical and intellectual background. She discusses the 1913 Armory Show, a Trojan horse that unleashed the European avant-garjde movements on the American public; the 1920s—a period of retrenchment, compromises, and provincial Cubism; and the 1930s—the period of the American Scene Painters, the Regionalists, and the projects organized by the Works Progress Administration.
In the late 1930s and early 1940s New York became one of the great artistic capitals—indeed, it has now replaced Paris as the world centre of art. In New York the first genuine American movement was born: Abstract Expressionism. Miss Rose examines the revolutionary techniques and stylistic development of the Abstract Expressionists of the first generation, including Gorky, Pollock, and de Kooning. She then studies the painters of the New York school (Gottlieb, Rothko, Still, Kline) and the Abstract Expressionists of the second generation. She also describes the recent movements ('Pop' Art, Post-painterly Abstraction, Optical Art and Minimal Art) and their exponents: Rauschenberg, Johns, Warhol, Oldenburg, Noland, Louis, and many others. Miss Rose concludes with two invaluable chapters on the remarkable development of modern American sculpture and architecture. _____-
