Hungarian Peasant Costumes
This is the third volume of the Hungarian Folk Art series. These days traditional costumes are only worn in a few villages, and most peasants have changed to city wear. This change is popularly known as 'the undressing', an expression that hits the nail on the head. Alice Gáborján describes the development of peasant clothes and those features which are peculiar to them. She makes use of what peasants are still wearing, of pieces kept but not worn, and of those in ethnographical collections. What makes this book both unusual and ail the more valuable for those who not only want to feast their eyes but also wish to understand what is happening, is that it describes 'the undressing' and its historical and social reasons.
