^^ Battersea shield. Art is a term too often r borrowed by the archaeologist to explain any object ' '' that is not obviously useful, but here it can clearly be seen that many of the appliances of daily life in ancient times have aflL aesthetic appeal to the modem beholder. Many of the illustrations show objects for the first ^sfe'f ' in colour and others illustrate those hitherto
^ " found only in learned journals. This book will be
valued by scholar and layman for its selection of ' - material and its perceptive comparisons arid obser-
