Auguste Rodin 1840-1917:
Sculpting life
While anchring his practice frimly in the traditions of Antiquity and the Renaissance, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) praved the way of modern sculpture. Far from respecting classic iconographical conventions, he was interested from a very early stage in movement, the expression of the body, chance effects and the incomplete fragment. He thereby gave life and shape to the masterpieces for which he is universally famousm including iconic works of sculpture such as The Kiss and The Thinker.
Produced in collaboration with the Musée Rodin, this book examines the formative years of Rodin's training as well as the key stages of his subsequent career. It traces the genesis of his sculptures and monumental works from both a historical and an aesthetic point of wiew, and thereby illuminates the links that exist between all his works. The reader is invited to discover Rodin's studio from the inside - the modelling in clay, the passage from plaster to marble, the process of enlarging works and the creation of assemblages - and to Rich in innovations and transgressions, Rodin's signature style also leaves its mark on his erotic drawings.
An inexhaustible source of inspiration for subsequent generations of artists, Rodin transmits through his art, with unequalled force, his passion for observing from life, working with living models and capturing the truth of forms. François Blanchetiere shows us how we may discover - and rediscover - this prieceless legacy.
The author: François Blanchetiere studied History and Art History at the universities of Caen, Lyon and Paris-Sorbonne. He has been curator at the Musée Rodin (Paris and Meudon) since 2005.
