Japanese Woodblock Prints in 200 Masterpieces From Ukiyo-e to Shin Hanga The Birth of Woodblock Prints In 1603, the priestess Okuni from Gran Shrine of Izumo (Izumo Taisha), one of the oldest and most important Shinto shrines in Japan which is located in today's Shimane Prefecture, is said to have travelled 350 kilometres (218 miles) to Kyoto to dance with her all-female troupe. Teahouse Entertainments strained performance compared with the established, courtly Noh drama and is considered the birth of a new form of theatre, kabuki. Word spread quickly through Japan's cultural capital about this somewhat louche but enticing new way of dancing, and Okuni's dance in particular became a subject for paintings for the affluent aristocracy (pp. 10/11). Against the backdrop of the new peace reached after decades of warfare between the feudal lords, kabuki developed in the years that followed into a popular form of entertainment for the townspeople (chönin) in other cities as well. This was especially true of Edo (today's Tokyo), which had been chosen by the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) as his headquarters in 1590 and from that point on increased steadily in size, surprassing one million inhabitants by the late 18th century. Entrepreneurial merchants and craftsmen were able to profit from the growing needs of the urban population and as more forms of entertainment flourished, such as prostitution, the ruling government attempted to control them through the establishment of licensed districts, for example, the Yoshiwara district in Edo in 1617. Consequently, portraits of idealised, beautiful women in chic attire became a popular subject for paintings in the second half of the 17th century (p. 49). Vissza
