BRÜCKE
Bridging the gap
The advent of Expressionism
In the German city of Dresden on 7 June 1905, the foundation of the Die Brücke artist's group (1905-1913) is widely regarded as the birth of Expressionism. Led by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, th group sought to reject the limits of academia and, as their name suggested, to bridge the path to an artistic future. Their manifesto, printed with a woodblock, insisted on absolute freedom from convention in their work as well as their lives.
CUBISM
Fractured forms
Deconstructing perspective with Picasso and peers
Pioneered by Picasso and Braque, Cubism has been described as the firs avant-garde art movement of the 20th century. With inspiration from African and Native American art and sculpture, its practitioners dconstructed European conventions of viewpont, form, and perspective to create flatened, fragmened, and revolutionary images.
